I was recently pinged by a friend to read a very interesting blog from Harini Calamur called POV.
I agree 100% with her views. The traditional media has made the entire eposide look like a live reality show. Everything is about ratings. Channels like India TV are outregious.
Do check out this link.
Week 1 Post 26/11 - The Media as Pimp - Maut ke Bhadwe
At the same time I must appreciate the work social media has done to get the reality to the world. Sites like Facebook, Orkut, Instablogs and thousands of bloggers have done a great job getting the correct information to the users.
What do you think about this ? Did the media respond similarly to 9/11 in the US?

One TV channel showed on its screens a candle as a tribute to the martyr and people who died in the Mumbai terror attack and requested people to SMS on certain number to keep this candle alive. As per my knowledge such SMSes add healthy income to TV channels because they are charged commercially. Where is all that money going?? If the TV channel had announced to distribute income generated by such SMSes to the relatives of those who died in attack, it could be considered as a welcome step but nothing like that has been announced.
No doubt, media has made this a reality TV show. They also looked at the incident as the opportunity to promote their channels by emphasizing them to be the first to bring a particular news/coverage to the public. Also, what media does not understand is that some moments are very personal such as funeral of the police officers who died during this incident. That was not the right time to interview the family members, bring live coverage to the public or ask opinion about the incident. Media needs to know the limitations and sensitivity of the situation.
Social medial is really doing a good job with resposibility not like just advertising the issue to just earn their advertisements.
hi
thanks for the link back.
there seems to be this ghoulish desire for news - i am watching the channels put on cctv footage on policemen getting killed !!
and there was barkha who held her ’we the people with the burnt out Taj as the back drop — the same Barkha who called for the CM’s head for pretty much the same thing...
i don’t like politicians. but atleast public outrage may bring them to book
what do we do about the media - and i say this as someone who has been in the media for 15 years, and has been very proud of it until the last two years.
